Mould Removal and Remediation

How does your company test for mould?

Testing mould can be done two ways, air and surface sampling. Surface sampling involves collecting a sample with a sterile swab or tape. This sample is then viewed under a microscope to determine if the sample contains mould, and if so, what is the spore and what species of mould has been found. Air sampling involves collecting a known volume of air and determining the number and types of mold spores present. Indoor levels are then compared to outdoor levels to determine if mold amplification is occurring within a building. Mold levels indoors should generally be 30-70% those of outdoor levels. If they are higher, then there is a mold problem.

Why should we hire Beyond Clean Group to get rid of the Mould?

Just like most trades, there are always contractors and companies looking make a quick buck. However, due to potential health risks associated with mould, it is critical that mould remediation work be performed by a company whose staff are trained and as ‘Advanced Microbial Remediation Technicians’. Our staff here at Beyond Clean Group are certified by the IICRC in this field as ‘Advanced Microbial Technicians’. Due to our training and experience, throughout the mould abatement process we provide the highest level of protection for you, your family, occupants and workers within the structure by containing mould spores and dust within the containment areas.

When mould is discovered and after we are engaged as your professional remediation firm, we will develop a comprehensive project plan consistent with industry indoor air quality (IAQ) standards and applicable regulations, and in many cases, the services of an industrial hygienist (IH) will be used in order to determine the severity of the indoor air problem. A program of containment and drying (and demolition if necessary) will be developed. Once the mould remediation is completed, we work with a third party indoor hygienist using post-abatement clearance testing to establish that the project has been successfully completed to professional protocols and return the structure to normal levels.

What is mould?

Moulds are microscopic organisms found virtually everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. Moulds exist to break down organic material and recycle nutrients in the environment. There are four requirements that are needed for mould to colonize and become a potential hazard, Air, temperature, moisture and food source. Humidity and water leaks are the cause of most mold infestations. Moulds are tiny (VERY tiny), lightweight and easily detached by air movement. The ‘musty’ smell you identify when you enter an area that has mould is caused by a gas called Microbial Volatile Organic Compound (MVOC).

Every one of us has a different threshold limit value (TLV) and can tolerate different levels of toxins, bacteria or other airborne materials. The most common symptoms of mould exposure are cough, congestion, runny nose or trouble breathing. Mould can also worsen asthma symptoms or other allergies. If mould is present, young children (under the age of 18), the elderly, chronically ill, pregnant and immune compromised individuals are at greater risk.

Why can’t I just use bleach to kill the Mould myself?

Apart from not having the proper personal protective equipment and training (did you know by trying to kill and clean it yourself you can make it airborne and infect more areas of your place), you should not use bleach to “treat” the mold. Bleach will remove the discolouration but may leave the micro flora that will enable the mould to return in exactly the same spot when conditions are right. Bleach (or sodium hypochlorite specifically) is water based and when the chlorine escapes the water; your treatment will only feed the moulds roots with the water left from the bleach. Without the use of the proper containments, equipment, personal protection, and knowledge, you may make your problem worse than before.

Why is everyone so scared of Mould?

Everyone has an opinion. It is coming into the media spotlight more and more. Being informed and educated on the causes and effects of mould and mould removal is a good thing. If you have mould present in your home, a mould removal consultation is needed. Evidence of mold means there are other problems with your home that need to be identified and corrected.
The typical reaction to elevated levels of mould spores is an allergic reaction. This is similar to the seasonal allergies many people develop in the autumn when outdoor mould levels are often high. The typical symptoms are sneezing, nasal and sinus congestion, irritation in the eyes, nose, and throat, and coughing. In sensitive individuals, more serious problems may develop such as: shortness of breath, frequent headaches, trouble concentrating, mood changes, nausea, dizziness, stress fatigue, asthma, skin irritation through to serious allergic reactions, asthma attacks and even permanent lung damage.
